Hot Club Sandwich present a repertoire of original songs about life in New Zealand from the point if view of the average middle class, middle aged, back yard bloke. Themes include coffee culture, TV evangelists, rugby fans, fashion victims, consumerism, youth culture and Wellington night life, lifestyle farmers, incomprehensible computer technology and appliance shopping. There are laughs a plenty with some satirical and provocative edges.

Showtime Australia is proud to present Hotel California – The Eagles Experience, filling the musical void left behind when the world’s much loved rock superstars, The Eagles, disbanded in 1982.
Join the five highly respected, multi-talented musicians in The Eagles Experience – Hotel California, a faithful recreation of The Eagles’ timeless hits, a show that salutes the talent and musicianship of the original members.
- David Grey as Don Henley
– David Wright as Glenn Frey
– Tony Cowell as Joe Walsh
– Russell Davey as Timothy B Schmit
– Richard Baker as Don Felder
From the ‘70s through to the ‘80s, The Eagles were a major force in the world music scene. They were heaped with Gold and Platinum Records, showered with awards, and struggled to keep up with demand for product and live appearances, a strain that many say led to their break-up.
The Eagles Show - Hotel California focuses on The Eagle’s Hell Freezes Over Tour of the early ‘90s, capturing the an era when The Eagle’s music undeniably transcended the boundaries of rock, R&B and country.
David Grey – Don Henley
“My first introduction to the eagles was by a family member who was a huge fan.
I was a young Drummer growing up in Scotland trying to find my way into the music scene at the time when I was introduced to the great talents of Mr Don Henley.
Not only was he a fantastic time keeper but he owned one of the most heartfelt voices I had ever encountered, from that day on I was determined that somehow I wanted to be just like him and set out on my journey to achieve my goal.
I played around the UK in my early days in various tribute shows and a chance meeting at a gig one night with the head of SHOWTIME AUSTRALIA cemented my position in THE EAGLES EXPERIENCE as I was offered back stage on the spot the opportunity to come over to Australia and star in this wonderful show which you are watching tonight.
I packed my bags and dragged my family 10,000 miles across the ocean to live out my boyhood dream and get to sit on stages all over the world and sing some of the greatest songs ever written.”
David Wright – Glenn Frey
I’ve been a professional musician since leaving college at 16, playing in clubs, hotels, theatres and cruise liners along the way. I’ve been a fan of the Eagles since their inception, their Greatest Hits album 1971-75, has always been a family favourite. I particularly admire the versatility in their songwriting. Each Eagles album contains such great songs with a story to tell, using various styles such as ballads, country and rock music.
I was introduced to Showtime through one of the other band members and jumped at the chance to play one of my heroes, Glenn Frey (any excuse to sport a Seventies hairstyle and handlebar moustache). I always enjoyed the sweet, clear tone of Frey’s voice, which is reminiscent of other artists I admire, such as James Taylor, Joni Mitchell and Carole King. So, for me, working in the Eagles Experience is a joy not a job.
Tony Cowell - Joe Walsh
I was 12, growing up in New Zealand, when my brother showed me my first chords on the guitar and I was hooked. It has been a loyal friend ever since and with it I have had the opportunity to play in many places, with many fine musicians. When I first heard the “Hotel California” album I was blown away with the great songs and outstanding vocals, but in particular the amazing guitar work by Joe Walsh and Don Felder.
When I was offered the part by Showtime I did not hesitate to take on the role, as I believe Joe and I both have an edge to our playing and fly by the seat of our pants sometimes.
It is an honour for me to be playing the part of Joe Walsh in the Eagles Experience.
Richard Baker – Don Felder
“I grew up in a musical family in Brisbane, Australia, and first heard the Eagles at a very young age, and from that went on to study guitar for over 20 years, and also bass, drums, mandolin, music composition and vocal arranging, and after doing this found a new appreciation for the Eagles musical skill and song writing abilities, and was drawn to the role of Don Felder, who was the musician's musician within the band, having co-wrote many of the Eagles songs, and wrote the music for Hotel California.
Don Felder, like myself, is a real perfectionist when it comes to live performance, always striving to make each performance better than the last, and making sure it's as close to the real thing in every musical detail. I always like to make sure the crowd can shut their eyes and swear the band they are listening to is the real Eagles.”
Russell Davey – Timothy B Schmit
“I started performing in vocal groups and learning piano from the age of ten. The first record I bought was The Long Run, which features the Timothy B Schmidt song ‘I Can’t Tell You Why’. I studied jazz piano and bass guitar at the Australian National University, and have been playing both instruments and singing in blues and rock bands for over 24 years.
I was thrilled to be invited to portray Timothy in the Eagles Experience as my style of playing and vocal range is suited to the part. To impersonate the character I watched videos of him performing and studied his movements and expressions. I am pleased that Timothy has his own songs on the latest Eagles album and that he has released a new solo album. I love the music of the Eagles including the solo projects of each member and I feel privileged to be part of the Eagles Experience”.
The Eagles Show – Hotel California is an exciting showcase of all the chart-toppers, such as Take it Easy, One of These Nights, Take it to the Limit, Heartache Tonight, Hotel California, Lyin’ Eyes, Witchy Woman, New Kid In Town, Tequila Sunrise, Desperado, Best of My Love and Life in the Fast Lane, as well as more recent releases, Get Over It and Love will Keep Us Alive.
The group also performs selected solo hits of 1971 founding members Don Henley and Glen Frey, and Joe Walsh, who joined The Eagles in 1975.
The music of The Eagles touched the hearts of a generation. If you enjoyed life in the fast lane in the 70s, or simply yearn for a night at the Hotel California, don’t miss this amazing multi media show.

Join us for coffee and discussion at the Ashburton Art Gallery following The Last Station.
The Last Station - In 1910, acclaimed Russina novelist Leo Tolstoy, in the later stage of his life, works rather than a writer but as the leader of the Tolstoyan Movement, whose basic tenets are brotherly love and world peace through pacifism, and a denouncement of material wealth and physical love. His cheif follower is Vladimir Chertkov, who does whatever he requires to advance the cause. Chertkov hires a young man named Valentin Bulgakov to be Tolstoy's personal secretary in carrying out this work. Once ensconced in the life on the estate where much of the work is taking place, Bilgakov quickly learns that many there take from the movement only what he/she wants/believes. Also cheif amongst the movement's wants is the deeding of all Tolstoy's writings to the people so after his death it will become public domain. Tolstoy's wife, the Countess Sofya Andreevna Tolstoy, believes that her husband's writings are rightfully hers after he passes, as she wants and believes she deserves the monetary benefits derived from such. This places a strain between those in the movement, especially Chertov and Tolstoy's daughter Sasha, and the Countess. Bulgatov acts as the mediator between the parties, he who feels he needs to do what is truly in Tolstoy's heart regardless of what Tolstoy may say or do....starring Helen Mirren, Christopher Plummer, James McAvoy and Paul Giamatti.

Lauriston Playcentre Fundraiser
Friday 30th July
Methven Heritage Centre
The fundraisers' latest money spinning venture will bring four actors from the Christchurch based Court Jesters to the new Methven Heritage Hall for an evening of improvised comedy.
In the show called “Off the Map”, the creative jesters will create a range of eccentric characters and weave a story from a few words supplied by the audience.
“It will be a very entertaining evening, full of off the cuff humour and verbal audience participation,” says Lauriston resident and new playcentre building supporter Raewyn Maw.
As befitted the community, the themes for evening would have strong local and rural focuses, she said.
As part of the July 30 fundraiser, two local artists, Carmen and Jenny Thompson, will exhibit their artworks in the hall.
Proceeds from the sale of an artwork by Jenny Thompson will go towards the building fund.
Tickets for the event can be purchased from Raewyn Maw, who can be contacted on 302 1885.
Kids for Cambodia Charitable Trust fundraiser at the Hotel Ashburton.
Items include: a brand new VW Polo car, a luxury family holiday overseas, a variety of artworks and fashion and motivational items.
Collectable pieces going under the hammer include framed and signed products from tennis ace Roger Federer, Grand Prix driver Michael Schumacher, former Beatle Paul McCartney and an All Blacks shirt signed by rugby greats Colin Meads, Wilson Whinnery and Brian Lochore.
All proceeds from the auction night will support the building of new classroom in the remote village of Makak, close to the town of Siem Reap in Cambodia.
Co-ordinating the fundraising effort is Ashburton woman Sarah Green, who set up the charitable trust after hearing about the plight of Cambodia's rural population from her daughter Sophie.
“It all start when Sophie came home from school one day and said she wanted to raise money for a school/orphanage project in Cambodia. We sat down, thought about it and things moved on from there,” said Mrs Green.
After a lot of letter writing, numerous phone calls and charity generosity, the dream is getting is moving ever closer for the Greens.
Helping her efforts at the gala evening will be a couple of well known celebrities.
Singer and entertainer Frankie Stevens will MC the event, whilst inspirational mountaineer Mark Inglis will be a guest speaker.
Three local auctioneers will aim to get the most out of the audience on the night as well.
Tickets have been selling well for the event and are strictly limited to 400.
The doors will open at 7.15pm for pre-auction browsing, nibbles and drinks, before the auction kicks off proper at 8pm.
Tickets are available from Sarah Green on 308 1261.
