24 August 2017 - By Mick Jensen - One of the district's oldest indoor bowls clubs, Wakanui, celebrates its 60th birthday this year and a get together of players, both past and present, is on the cards.
Wakanui Indoor Bowls Club was formed on June 27, 1957 by members of the Wakanui Table Tennis Club, who had visited and been impressed with a bowls facility in Ashburton.

The club's first president was AJ Doak and other committee members included C Crawford (vice-president) and W Moore (secretary/treasurer).
A set of bowls and mats were bought and bowls has been played in the hall for the last six decades.
Wakanui club captain Kevin Smith joined in the 1970s, when membership was at its strongest, and his wife Gaylene joined in 1990.
The club was top of the pack in the local competition from the 1970s through to the 1990s, although the Willowby club held that honour today, Mr Smith said.
Mr Smith said club membership had been filled by members of well-known local families like the Buttericks, Bennetts, Doaks, McCoskers, Wests and Fords in the early days, but no players from those families played any more.
Club nights still ran on Monday nights from April through to September and a dozen players turned out.
The club had a couple of younger players, but more young blood was needed, he said.
Indoor bowls ``was a good game to play and sociable'', Mr Smith said.
Members of the Wakanui Indoor Bowls Club will gather in the coming weeks to mark the club's 60th anniversary. Contact Kevin or Gaylene Smith on 308 6070.
