By Mick Jensen - Iain Henderson’s Welcome to My Nightmare exhibition is on at the Ashburton art Gallery. The exhibition features 10 unique jewellery and sculpture works from the master goldsmith. He uses spiritual influences in conjunction with nature’s elements to produce his thought-provoking works. The artist describes himself as an “an artist jeweller” or “independent hand jeweller”. “I design and make jewellery from start to finish. I make the piece for myself and whether it sells or not, I have still experienced the pleasure of creating something very personal,” says Henderson. Henderson’s Ashburton exhibition features a 50/50 split of jewellery and sculpture. The 3D sculptures are made in Stirling silver and gold. They are set with precious and semi precious gems. They tell a story of conflict within Henderson’s mind and merge his love of machines and organic form. “I build structures that live and battle within themselves. There is always a point of innocence – a woman, a child or a toy. Around them life goes on, often in threatening form,” said Henderson. Some of the sculptures have been described as looking like something out of Mad Max movie. Protruding jet planes are a common theme in all of them. Henderson’s jewellery pieces use emeralds, diamonds, paua and pearls. The works on display will cost you between $3,000- $14,000 to buy and reflect the price of the raw materials used. Unlike a painter who has paint and canvas to pay for, the jeweller’s palette of metal and precious stones can be a big financial outlay, with no guaranteed return. Iain Henderson’s exhibition runs until April 25.
