By Mick Jensen - The Ashburton College uniform clothing store is a place for bargains. Back to school for many children means new uniforms, new shoes, more stationery, as well as gym kit and new bags to carry their loads in. The cost to parents can be huge, especially for those with more than one child. Blazers and some vests cost close to $200 new and even a polyester tie costs $21. To save costs, wise parents opt to check out the college’s own clothing store for bargain gear. Last week the college store opened its doors for a series of open days in the lead up to next week’s start back dates. Staffing the shop last week was Jenny Ruck and Jane Brooker, who both reported plenty of activity and a busy flow of shoppers. Good quality, clean, second-hand school uniforms of all sizes filled the racks in the room above the college cafeteria. Available were blazers for $65, a third of the cost of new one, winter kilts for less than $80 and shorts and shirts for less than $10. There were also decent prices for skirts, socks, vests and polar fleeces. Shopping for the first time in the shop was 13 year old Libby Hodzelmans and her mum Kristine. Libby starts her first year at Ashburton College next week and had no uniform to her name before entering the shop. Mother and daughter said they were hoping to snap up some bargains from amongst the racks of skirts and tops. The college shop takes a 20 per cent commission on all sales, with the rest going back to the clothes owner. In many cases the money is used for to buy more uniform items for the fast growing teens. |
