By Mick Jensen - Raffles are a good source of fundraising and fundraisers are always a grateful bunch. A recent raffle by the Ashburton Woodworkers Group netted them around $2,500, money that will go towards a building fund and a step closer to a dream of having their own clubrooms. Whilst more money is obviously needed and the exact location of the building is yet to be determined, the group are hopeful for a spot in the Tinwald Domain. “Ideally, we would like to be located close to the Lynn Woodworking Museum,” said Ashburton Woodworkers president Ross Close. The group attended domain board discussion meetings, shared their thoughts with the powers that be and also submitted clubroom plans. “Our discussions with the board were slow at first, but now things are up and running and we’re waiting with interest to see what happens in the future development of the domain,” said Mr Close. The Tinwald Domain was of Ashburton’s most under-utilised assets, he said. The group’s plans are for a decent sized building, one big enough for machinery and a workshop, but also one where extra meeting space is available. The woodworker’s suggestions include a double use of the rooms. “We are happy to incorporate space in our design and open up the premises to other groups. The groups would be people that didn’t need too much room, but still want to meet regularly to play cards, sew or the like,” said Mr Close. The new building will also be used for teaching the craft of woodworking and to encourage others, particularly youngsters, to have a go at creating things from wood. Equipment won’t be a problem in the proposed new space. The group has lathes galore and plenty of experience and know-how to go with them. |
