Poultry man Brian on big screen PDF Print E-mail
18 May 2017 - By Mick Jensen - Ashburton poultry enthusiast Brian Glassey is one of the stars of new Kiwi documentary Pecking Order, which opens in cinemas around the country, including Ashburton's Regent Cinema, today (May 18).
The chook breeder is one of the personalities featured in the 80 minute feel-good film, which tells the story of simmering rivalries at the Christchurch Poultry, Bantam and Pigeon Club.
Club infighting, problematic birds and irregular judging are all part of the challenge for breeders who are keen to rule the roost at the 2015 National Poultry Show.
Filmed in 2014 and 2015, the quirky doco follows the birds from chicks through to their appearance in front of judges.
The film's premiere was held in Christchurch on May 9 and Brian Glassey was among those attending the ``flockumentary'' screening.
Mr Glassey said he had enjoyed the premiere and seeing a cross section of his bird breeding mates and himself on the big screen.
He said the doco would hopefully lift the profile of bird shows and could translate into more breeders and more enthusiasts.
While rural towns like Ashburton had an understanding of poultry breeding, those in the city ``did not have a clue''.
``I think the documentary offers a fair insight into what we do as breeders. It was good to be involved with it and bit of light-hearted fun.''
Pecking Order was directed by Slavko Martinov.
He knew little about poultry before making the film.
The Ashburton Fanciers' Society will hold its annual show in the Tancred Street Sports Hall over the weekend of June 16-17.
