11 March 2019 - ADC - Four deserving local people and groups will be recognised for their outstanding community service in the Ashburton District at the annual Community Honours Award ceremony on Friday 15 March.

The awards, which honour distinguished voluntary pursuits, will be presented by Ashburton District Mayor Donna Favel at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre at 2.00pm this Friday.

The award recipients are:

Mayor's Award for Public Service - Jill Newton
Mayor's Award for Public Service - Gwenda Ireland
Ashburton Medal - Martin Nordqvist
Civic Award - Age Concern Ashburton

Mayor Favel said, "I was thrilled with the high calibre of the nominations for this year's awards. It's such a pleasure to see all of the hard work happening in our community thanks to the selfless efforts of these volunteers and I'm delighted to be able to present these awards to four very deserving people and groups."

The Community Honours Awards recognise meritorious voluntary community service and those who have not been recognised through their own sector awards in the district. The awards are available through four categories; Mayor's Award for Public Service, Ashburton Medal, Civic Awards and Honorary Citizens.

Nominations for this year's awards were open from 16 January until 14 February 2019. The nominations were assessed by a special Council Selection Panel.

"The Community Honours Awards are a fantastic way to say 'thank you' to our volunteers for their dedication, generousity and willingness to go above and beyond.

"I'd like to congratulate our four award recipients on their achievements and look forward to presenting them their awards on Friday.

"I'd also like to extend my sincere thanks to all of our other volunteers in the community - your efforts do not go unnoticed. If you know someone who you believe is deserving of a Community Honours Award, please consider putting their name forward for next year's awards," Mayor Favel added.

The Community Honours Award ceremony is open to the public. To reserve your seat, please contact the Council by emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or phone 03 307 7700.
