7 September 2017 - School teams from Mid Canterbury enjoyed a mixed bag of results at a big junior basketball tournament played in Ashburton from Saturday through to Tuesday.
Forty teams made up of Year 9/10 students from schools around the South Island played games at EA Networks Centre and Oxford Street Basketball Stadium.
The top local performers were the Ashburton College girls team, which finished third in their 16 team competition.
The team beat Timaru (69-58), Papanui (77-37) and Cashmere (86-26) in pool play, before dominating Waimea College in the quarter final to win by 80-43.
A close semi final saw them lose out by just two points (52-50) to Kavanagh College. In the play-off for third and fourth place, they beat Timaru Girls 79-59.
The Ashburton College boys team lost its opening two games against Marlborough (61-46) and Middleton Grange (74-51), but bounced back with victories over Kavanagh College (90-32) and Christchurch Boys (77-65).
They took on local rivals Mount Hutt College in the final pool play match and in a very close and competitive game won 51-49.
The Ashburton boys then went on to beat Cashmere High School 97-71 in the first playoff match, lost 72-70 to St Andrew's College in the second match and then finished with a 62-57 victory over Christchurch Boys to finish 11th in the 24 team tournament.
The winners of the girls' tournament were Kavanagh College, while Waimea College won the boys' competition.
