9 November 2017 - A decision to opt out of a new single entity SPCA has resulted in a name change for the district's main animal welfare facility.
Formerly known as the Mid Canterbury SPCA, the facility is now known as Mid Canterbury Animal Welfare Centre.

Based at the complex it owns next door to Vetlife Ashburton on Seafield Road, the centre will continue to be run by two dozen volunteers and will offer care and support for sick and injured animals.
The centre no longer has any SPCA affiliation or SPCA legal powers.
New signage will go up shortly. Mid Canterbury Animal Welfare Centre is open from 9.30am until noon from Monday to Saturday and inquiries can be made to 308 4432.
All dog control inquiries should be directed to Ashburton council.
