Location for Methven skate park secured PDF Print E-mail
10 August 2017 - ADC - The Methven community is now one step closer to getting its own skate park, after Ashburton District Council today voted to lease a section of land to Kidz Methven for the development of the park.

Council has agreed to lease a 2,024m² section of land on the corner of McMillan and Bank Streets to the community group, charging an annual rent of $1.00, if demanded.

Council Commercial Manager Colin Windleborn says the decision is a good outcome for Kidz Methven, who have been working to establish a public skate park after the privately-owned indoor skate park was damaged in the 2011 earthquakes.

“Council issues community leases on a case by case basis and this means we can assess the circumstances and come to a reasonable arrangement. The rent recognises the considerable costs associated with the establishment of the skate park, which will require a resource consent, building and drainage.

“The lease also has good outcomes for Council and the wider community, as it is expected the skate park will eliminate the $1,700 yearly maintenance costs Council currently spends on mowing the land. Local young people will also have a new facility to keep themselves busy that’s well located in the central part of town.”

Some of the green space on the section will be retained, as Council has restricted the area of development for the skate park to be no more than 1,200m². The skate park will also be designed in line with the National Guidelines for Crime Prevention.

Kidz Methven had originally secured a site for a skate park on the main street of Methven, but it was later decided that the land was not suitable due to its proximity to the main road.

The land on the corner of McMillan and Bank Streets will be leased to Kidz Methven for three years, with a right of renewal for 10 years.
