|Footy season soon set to kick-off|
28 March, 2013 - By Mick Jensen - The goal posts in the Ashburton Domain will shortly be erected to herald the start of another Mid Canterbury football season.
Local teams playing in the Christchurch leagues kick-off matches from April 6, whilst home-based leagues start up at the end of April. Mid Canterbury Football's development officer Peter Roberts said another competitive season was on the cards.
``We're hosting a `Give Football a go' day on April 6 from 9.30am and still accepting registrations from players and teams keen to play in the local competition. Anyone aged between four and 15 years is invited to come along to the domain on the day to check it out,'' he said.
Coach Roberts said the same spread of travelling teams would represent Mid Canterbury in the Christchurch leagues as last season.
``We've had quite a few changes in our senior team. We've lost some players to Universities, but been able to bring in both local and Christchurch based players to replace them.
``Once again we have two youth teams playing in the U18 competition and they should be pretty competitive,'' he said
Argyle Park will once again be used as a training venue for teams, with most competitive matches played in the Ashburton Domain.
In the past football pitches at the Collegiate sports ground were established as back-up playing surfaces, but this season two pitches at Devon Park would be used instead, said Mr Roberts.
Looking ahead, Ashburton will host the biennial 12th grade Friendship Games tournament in July, which draws teams from around the South Island, as well as two travelling teams from Japan.
A 24-team girls tournament will also be played here in August.
