16 August 2017 - ADC - Drivers around the Ashburton District are being urged to take care on the roads following a number of wet weather events that have caused widespread potholes and washouts.

Ashburton District Council Service Delivery Group Manager Neil McCann says contractors are working very hard to repair the roads, however there is a lot of work to get to and it will take time.

“After the heavy rainfall event on 21 July, contractors quickly began repairing the roads, however after the rainfall we’ve had in recent days, some of the work they completed has been undone and will need to be carried out again. On top of this, we are expecting more rainfall which will likely do further damage.

“Water is a road’s worst enemy. It seeps into minute cracks and erodes the quality of the bitumen. As pressure such as vehicles driving on the road continues to push the water into the cracks, the road begins deteriorating. That’s when we end up with potholes and washouts.

“We have a big list of roads to attend to, but we can’t get to all of it at once. In the interim, I urge all drivers to be cautious and slow down, especially on roads they aren’t familiar with. It’s also important to keep a safe distance from vehicles in front of you so you have time to spot potholes and avoid hitting them. Please be assured that we are doing our best to repair the roads. We really appreciate your patience.”
