By Mick Jensen - It was an impulse decision, but one that could pay dividends for Ashburton couple Cartwright Terry and Janelle Hauiti.
The couple recently bought an old fashioned mobile pie cart and they are already knocking out burgers, chips and drinks to hungry punters.

They intend to take their mobile food kitchen to events around the district and to prime locations such as Lake Hood, where the food on the run market is non-existent. And to public events where food facilities are lacking
“The skiers and boaties on the water at Lake Hood are often at the far end of the lake, well away from any food or drink facilities, so we’re keen to provide them with something,” said Mr Terry.
Whilst the couple plan on selling the typical deep-fried fare, they also have a few healthy food ideas up their sleeve.
Smoothies, frozen yoghurts and fresh fruit and cream are also on the cards.
Also topping their menu is the sale of food cooked by way of a hangi.
“We’ll cook the food up and later that day take it out fresh to the public,” said Cartwright Terry.
The change of direction for the former shearer, who has hails from Cambridge, but has shorn around the world over the last few years, is not a complete stab-in-the-dark business venture.
“My mum and dad ran two fish and chip shops when I was a kid and I used to work in one of the shops as a kid,” he said.
Partner Janelle is a keen foodie.
The enterprising couple, who are expecting their first child together any day now, are keen for a change of lifestyle and easier day jobs.
They have already tested the waters.
A recent Sunday evening stint in the Ashburton town centre netted them a number of passers-by and locals.
Their impressive mobile food wagon has an eye-catching paint job, built in generator and all the facilities needed to knock out tasty tucker.
With a mobile shop license and a keenness to fill a gap in the local market, the couple’s food-wagon is on the road and is keen to feed you.
