Eager scouts collect river rubbish PDF Print E-mail
24 August 2017 - Members of the Ashburton Kea scout group have lent a hand with rubbish collection and picked up bags of the stuff along the Ashburton River.
A dozen enthusiastic scouts trawled the river track between the Mania-O-Roto Scout den and Tinwald Bridge and were armed with black plastic bags and gloves.
They collected a variety of items including bottles, cans, a wheel hub and general litter.
The keas were supervised by leader Julie Hollings and parent volunteers.
Mrs Hollings said the rubbish collection initiative was a cornerstone project that the keas have to do for their bronze, silver and gold badges.
Rubbish bags had been supplied by Ashburton council and collectors were aged between five and eight years old and the scouting movement's youngest group.

Rubbish collectors, from left, Tommy Meares-Hay, Will Carnell, Jack Scoon, Will Humm, Reagan Print, Lincoln Tew, Will Broker, Connor Prichard and Noah Baynes. At rear are Sean Williams and Marcel Vlaanderen.
