Cait destined for further bowls success PDF Print E-mail
23 April, 2015 - By Mick Jensen - Cait Bassett is the newly crowned New Zealand U21 outdoor bowls champion and destined to achieve higher honours in the sport.
At just 19, she has only been playing the outdoor form of the game for three years.
Cait was always destined to give bowls a go.
Her parents, Murray and Lynette, both play, as does her brother Matt, who was the U18 national indoors champion three years ago, and grandparents on both sides are also bowlers.
``I started playing at the same time as mum when I was 10 and I've just kept playing and enjoying it.''
She first rolled out the mats with her family in the Willowby Hall and is a member of the Allenton Bowling Club, where top local player and Black Jack Sandra Keith also plays.
``I'm giving up the indoor game for a while to focus on my outdoor play. Over the next two years I'd love to make the New Zealand U25 team and ultimately the Black Jacks,'' said Cait.
Cait held her nerve at the Bowls New Zealand Kittyhawk national under 21 singles championships in Auckland at Easter, beating defending champion Ashleigh Jeffcoat convincingly in the final 21-7.
She went through pool play with one defeat to her name, but then edged close friend and doubles partner Katelyn Inch 21-20 in the quarter finals, before a more convincing 21-5 victory over Alex Greer in the semi.
Bowls, indoors or out, is no longer seen as an old person's game, says Cait.
Many of the top players are on the younger side and more youthful players are coming through all the time.
The former Longbeach school and Ashburton College student is studying for a certificate in baking at CPIT and has ambitions to become a pastry chef.
With the bowls season coming to an end, Cait's lofty ambitions will be put on hold until early September, when the new outdoor season begins.
