Bowlers flock to Ashburton PDF Print E-mail
14 June 2018 - More than 900 indoor bowlers converged on Ashburton this week for the 69th Summerset National Open & Masters Indoor Bowls Championship.
The week long tournament is being played at EA Networks Centre and features singles, pairs, triples and fours competitions.
Speaking at the opening ceremony on Saturday, New Zealand Indoor Bowls (NZIB) president Nigel Warnes thanked the Ashburton district for putting up its hand to host the event.
It was the first time the town had hosted the nationals, he said.
As well as the action on the mats, NZIB would also host a bowls forum to look at the future of indoor bowls, a North versus South academy and masters clash and a ``light hearted'' district challenge.
Mr Warnes said North and South Island teams would be named on Friday to play against each other later in the year in Ashburton.
Ashburton mayor Donna Favel was another speaker at the opening, and said the district was ``delighted and had great pleasure'' in hosting the event.
``It is no small feat to organise an event like this and the venue looks fantastic, so well done to the local organisers.
``We're very proud of our venue and also our district, so we hope you enjoy good friendships and take away great memories from your time here.''
Gary Low from Grasmere in Southland claimed the championship singles title on Sunday, beating Robert Wilson from South Otago, 10-9 on an extra end.
Ashburton MSA Club player Mark Sheard won the masters singles.
The pairs title went to Shelley and Mark Jacombs from Vogelmorn, Hutt Valley and Lyn and Graham Brittain from North End, Northland won the masters pairs.
The triples are being played as this paper goes to print and the fours will conclude the championship tomorrow.
