Awards, praise at assembly PDF Print E-mail
9 November 2017 - By Mick Jensen - Winter blues awards were presented and school leaders farewelled at Ashburton College's recent final assembly for 2017.
Addressing the assembly in his first year as school principal, Ross Preece said he had been impressed with the sporting and cultural efforts of students.
Those efforts had featured across a wide variety of disciplines and activities.
Travelling groups who had represented the school had done so without any negative incidents and ``no-one had been in his office'' following an away trip, which was impressive.
Mr Preece said students might not remember their English or maths classes in years to come, but they would likely remember the experience of representing the school at sport, or featuring in an event like the Stage Challenge.
Departing head girl and college Dux Samantha McArthur said she had thoroughly enjoyed her time at Ashburton College.
She was proud of her achievements and grateful for the support given to her.
Similar sentiments were echoed by departing head boy Nic Thomassen in his farewell speech.
He thanked teachers and house captains and said he had enjoyed his school leadership role.
Students vying to become school leaders in 2018 offered brief speeches at the school assembly on why they should be voted in.
Winter colours, blues and performance awards were also given out to students who have excelled across sporting and drama disciplines.
Colours, the most prestigious of the awards, were presented to 10 students who are either national champions, have been selected for a national sports team or have been members of a national cultural group.
The awards covered music, dance, air pistol shooting, orchestra and small bore rifle shooting.
Some 22 colours have been given at summer and winter blues ceremonies this year, the most at the college for some years.
