Ashburton's first male children's librarian PDF Print E-mail
12 April 2018 - By Mick Jensen - Ashburton Public Library's first male children's librarian has enjoyed his first week in the job.
Jonathan Nixon is Christchurch raised and trained as a primary school teacher.
In recent years he has swapped the stress of the classroom for the more relaxed environment of the library.
He previously worked at the Pukekohe Library, where he was also the children's librarian.
Mr Nixon said he had no desire to return to teaching, a job that had involved a lot of stress and continual assessment and reporting.
``I was lucky that my teaching qualifications are largely recognised in the library area.
``And with the extra training I've done since and with more planned, I am very comfortable in my career change.''
He was still able to work with and encourage kids, which was important to him.
``There have been a few surprised faces from the public seeing a male working in the library, but I'm used to that by now. It's the nature of the teaching and library environments - they are female dominated.''
Mr Nixon said his role included reading to visiting school classes and groups, explaining the layout of the library and how systems worked and also a regular Thursday morning storytime session.
He said he was keen to look at the introduction of a pre-school programme in the future, a programme that had been very well received in his previous job.
``I've been told I can be a bit `boisterous'. I also enjoy entertaining people, so I'm bringing those attributes into this role.''
Jonathan Nixon worked for Civil Defence in Christchurch in the aftermath of the earthquakes and hopes to get involved with it again here.
He moves to Ashburton with his wife Rachel and five-month-old son Caleb this week.

Jonathan Nixon reads an Anzac story to visiting children from Allenton School.
