Allenton getting word out on 100th PDF Print E-mail
18 May 2017 - By Mick Jensen - Allenton Rugby Club is getting the word out early ahead of big centennial celebrations planned for 2022.
The club will ``warm up'' with a 95th birthday bash over Queen's Birthday Weekend and will start collating facts, figures, photos and stories for a planned history booklet.
Club member Mark Argyle said celebrations on Friday, June 2 would be held at the club rooms and would be followed by a Saturday barbecue after the Senior B game against Rakaia.
``The centennial will be here before we know it, so we're keen to get together for a `muster' and to get the word out.
``Also, as a club, we're conscious of the fact that we have a number of older life members and the reality is that some of them might not be around in 2022.''
Mr Argyle said the club had lost six stalwarts in the last five years.
He said the family friendly club was keen to celebrate its proud history.
Over the years the club had fielded a number of top players, who have gone on to play representative rugby and even trialled for the All Blacks.
They included Huia Gordon, Bruce Parkin, Brian Sampson, Walter Tonks and Vern Muir, said Mr Argyle.
Allenton Rugby Club moved to its grounds off Melrose Road in 1977.
Although it no longer fields an A team, the club has a strong junior contingent of around 100 players, as well as 30 younger players involved with the Senior B team, the club's top team.
A number of rugby families, including the Grieves, Sampsons, Muirs, Suttons and McIntyres, have provided players over the years.
