St Davids Holiday Programme PDF Print E-mail

Once again St David’s church in Allens Road is offering a special programme during the school holidays for children aged between five and 12.

Organiser Anna Reith said the programme would be held between 9.30 and noon each day from Monday July 10 to Friday July 14. No bookings were needed and the cost was only $2 per day.

After being away from Ashburton for more than 25 years, Maxine Jepson, or Maxine Jones as she was known when last here, has returned as a guest artist at this year's Ashburton Society of Arts annual exhibition.

She was a window dresser from the time she left school in Ashburton, first at Heffords and then at Todds.

For several years a mid-winter lunch has been held at the Hinds Community Centre.

It gives long-term residents of the district an opportunity to meet and mingle with newer residents, especially those who have recently arrived to work on dairy farms.

New Toll Free Number Setup PDF Print E-mail

The Prime Minister's visit to Ashburton mid-Friday had one immediate effect, with a toll-free number being established within hours for people to obtain advice on a whole range of issues.

Ashburton District Council chief executive Brian Lester, said the number, 0800 779 997, would be answered by staff of the Ministry of Social Development between 8am and 5pm at weekends and from 7am to 8pm on weekdays.

Most people are unaware that Mt Hutt is a hive of activity 24 hours a day. With 200 staff on its books at present and more to be employed as the season progresses, it is a marathon exercise.

At night three groomers are ensuring that all trails are cleared and packed down ready for when the first skiers arrive. The half pipe, shaped like a skateboard ramp which has been built into the mountain needs to be maintained.

Regent Theatre Funding Update PDF Print E-mail

In spite of "bitter disappointment' at receiving no Government funding for its project this year, the Ashburton Performing Arts Theatre Trust intends to carry on and is convinced the community will support it.

Chairman Russell Anstiss said Frews Demolition of Christchurch had won the tender to demolish the old Regent Theatre and work was likely to start within two months.
