2 August 2018 - By Mick Jensen - Variety Theatre Ashburton's (VTA) new patron Alan McQuarters has a long local association with musical theatre and played in the orchestra in the company's first ever show back in 1961.
Now in his 90th year, Mr McQuarters was a founding member of VTA, which for many years was know as Ashburton Operatic.
He replaces the late Mona Reddecliffe, who was patron for 22 years.

2 August 2018 - By Mick Jensen - Mount Hutt College student Brea Rodderick is chasing her triathlon dreams and will represent New Zealand at the Triathlon World Championships in Australia next month and then the Youth Olympic Games in Argentina in October.
The Year 11 student qualified to compete by crossing the line first in the female youth section at the Oceania Championships in March.
The talented multi sporter is following a rigorous training programme to ensure she is in top shape for both competitions and is clocking up many hours of swim, bike and run training.

2 August 2018 - By Mick Jensen - Ashburton district councillors have approved a proposal to reduce the district's representation from 12 to nine.
The three-ward structure, with a slight amendment to the ward boundaries, will continue.
From the next election, council will be made up of the mayor, five councillors from the urban ward and two each from the Eastern and Western wards.

30 July 2018 - ADC - Ashburton District ratepayers will notice a change to their rates invoices when the first instalment for the 2018/19 year arrives in their email or letter box from today, with a new quarterly instalment schedule now in place, as well as a new-look invoice design.

Committee approves urgent works for Chinese settlement PDF Print E-mail

27 July 2018 - ADC - Ashburton District Council’s Finance and Business Support Committee yesterday agreed to urgent work being completed on the Chinese Settlement site in Allens Rd to preserve the land and its buildings. Further funding will be sought at a later date to complete the restoration of the site.
