Welcome to the 2010 Gym Company Duathlon Series Race 2
Race 2 of the Gym Company Duathlon was changed due to the weather. The morning started off fine then turned to rain and sleet at around 9.00am and the decision to cancel the bike leg due to the cold and windy conditions was made. After this , the weather appeared to clear and some may have questioned why they weren’t doing the bike leg.
The short course entrants competed over 3 laps and the long course 6 laps. This was now a running race and the runners were smiling whiles the strong cyclists were thinking this isn’t me. Points in the duathlon series weren’t up for grabs so it was just for honour and first prize in the categories. Over 90 people were on the start line while the weather was cold; none anticipated what was to come. During the race it rained then started to snow and everyone was happy they didn’t then have to do the bike ride. In the short course Andrew Prouting was first home looking strong from young James Faulkner then Jake Beeman, great to see these young guys running so well. In the ladies race Kelsey Ashworth was home first and actually fifth overall running really well. Hayley Gimlett second and first in the under 15 section and third lady home Kerrin Lester. In the long course Michael Fox showed a clean pair of heals from the start and lead from start to finish, he was closely followed across the line by Phil Causer and third home was Tania Causer, she really showed the other males how to run. Third male home was Ashburton’s Alan Sinclair, he was to be in the Duathlon team with dell Phillips but he wouldn’t run in his gumboots so Alan did it as an individual. In the women’s race Tania Causer took first place well clear of Bridget Due and third across the line was Marie Sorrell. As all the other competitors finished the snow continued to come down but they all appeared to have a smile on their facesand enjoyed the run in the cold conditions. We now wait until 18 July for race 3. With Race 2 having to be changed to a running race due to the weather conditions, the series will now be decided by the best two results of Races 1,3 and 4.
